For the Brazil Study Abroad experience, students are immersed in contemporary Brazilian music performance practice. Participants experience the vitality of Brazilian culture through the performance practice of regional and community music and dance in Recife and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Affiliated with UFPE in Recife and UFRJ in Rio, students will partake in Brazilian performance practice in both university and community venues including Maracatu study at Grupo Corpos Percussivos with Jorge Martins, and samba workshops with Celso Alvim and Monobloco. Cultural immersion will include Portuguese language classes, visit to prominent historic sites, and witness Afro-Brazilian religious practice.
Specific activities will vary depending upon individual interests but each student will have the opportunity to perform and study music, dance, and culture, participate in tours, attend music and dance performances, experience Brazil’s postcard icons of Corcovado, Ipanema, and Sugarloaf.
In this course we investigate music as culture. We will study defining perspectives in the discipline of ethnomusicology and experience cultural immersion in Recife and Rio de Janeiro to explore the range of ways that humans create and use music
